Incredibly hot and dry, the natural beauty of Death Valley National Park comes from the unexpected variety and scenery of its desert landscape; it is the lowest place on the continent, dipping to 282 feet below sea level, and in the background snow-capped mountains loom high. The heat makes this park more popular during the months between late fall and early spring, when hiking, backcountry camping and mountain biking are less physically exhausting. Scotty's Castle, a historical house from the 1920s, has daily tours on the fascinating history of its inhabitants and the design of the structure. The massive park is on the eastern edge of California, the southern portion lies due west of Las Vegas.
