A memorial that honors both the important role of Port Chicago in World War II and the lives lost due to the explosion of its naval magazine, the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial overlooks the quiet waters of Suisun Bay. The memorial is a solemn reminder of the July 17, 1944 explosion, which resulted in the biggest number of domestic casualties during the war. Located on the grounds of US Naval Station Port Chicago, the memorial is only open with prior reservation, providing a poignant reminder for family members and non-involved visitors alike.
