The memorial is a solemn reminder of the July 17, 1944 explosion, which resulted in the biggest number of domestic casualties during the war. Located on the grounds of US Naval Station Port Chicago, the memorial is only open with prior reservation, providing a poignant reminder for family members and non-involved visitors alike.
